About Laser Hair Removal and Pregnancy

For pregnant women, shaving their legs is one of the frustrating things they have to deal with as their bellies grow bigger. They have limitations in physical movement so it is not easy to bend in order to shave. Hormonal changes brought about by pregnancy makes the situation worse because women may find hair growing more and faster at this time, especially around the stomach, nipples and other areas of the body.

While excess hair will fall off on its own after pregnancy, they are unsightly. There are several ways to remove unwanted hair and one popular method is through laser treatment.

For mothers-to-be who want to find out about laser hair removal and pregnancy, here is some helpful information:

Laser hair removal is effective for permanently reducing hair. This process targets the melanin or the pigment found in the hair, thereby, causing thermal or mechanical damage to the hair follicles. However, there are some concerns if laser hair removal and pregnancy go together or if the procedure is safe for pregnant women. Unfortunately, there is not enough information about laser hair removal and pregnancy to make any solid conclusions as to the safety or danger of the procedure during pregnancy. Because there is no research yet on laser hair removal and pregnancy or the effect of the procedure on a fetus, many doctors recommend that pregnant women avoid this method of hair removal.

Another option would be electrolysis, wherein the electrologist inserts a very thin probe into the hair follicle and destroys it through short wave radio frequency. This process may use either of the two current types – galvanic, which flows through the patient’s body and is, therefore, not recommended for pregnant women, and thermolysis, which does not pass through the patient.

While thermolysis has no known harmful effects to pregnant women or to a fetus, most electrologists will require authorization from your doctor before performing the procedure. Like laser hair removal and pregnancy, there is a lack of study in this area so electrolysis, in general, is not recommended during pregnancy. If you decide to have electrolysis, you should avoid having it done on your breasts or your abdomen if you are on your last trimester.

Consider waxing as an alternative hair removal procedure. It is important to remember though that your skin may be more sensitive during pregnancy so consult your doctor first and use a lotion with antiseptic properties before and after waxing. The disadvantage of this method is it is painful.

The less painful creams or depilatories contain active ingredients. While there is no evidence of their dangers when used during pregnancy, it is best to consult with your physician. In addition, always try the product first on a small patch of skin.

In the end, you may be better off with just shaving. It is cheap and convenient. Ask your partner to assist you. Use a moisturizing lotion with vitamin E to keep your skin smooth and supple.
